My facebook friend has unfriended me: A Poem

I am so old I remember when unfriend was not a word,

We fell out, fought and argued, we stopped talking and moved on.

Liking took more effort than a little finger movement,

We shared clothing, books and boyfriends, films and bad ideas.

My facebook friend has unfriended me but given me no word,

To argue or explain and this puts me in a limbo

Between anger and confusion asking what was it I did?

What was unacceptable, which statement proved inedible

What ghastly tales have they been told by former facebook friends

Who should have better things to do since they too unfriended me.

Those we cast aside so easily with just a little click

Breed resentment in the dark net that lives inside our minds.

Hate-reading each other’s blogs for stimulants to anger highs,

Our most self-righteous anger yet, heady and delicious.

My facebook friend has unfriended me – I think it is as well.

Had I known they were this sort of soul, the sort to slink away,

The cowardly, the silent, the gone without a word,

I would have unfriended them myself, instead.

I don’t need that kind of shit in my life.

Keep my arsy moral highground by spelling out the problem

Old style unfriendly to send them on their way.

I didn’t need those likes or their empty validations

There remain thousands more people I have never met

Who are willing to send me kitten photos.

  1. Yes…I’m very ambivalent about FB. It’s difficult to sense and gauge emotions isn’t it on a small screen? So easy to misunderstand and be misunderstood. I deleted my account a couple of years ago, then later came to think that, however imperfect it is, it does provide a point of contact with people I’ve known and can no longer travel to see or to exchange opinions with a wider group of people (so-called friends)….thus I rejoined. Maybe it’s the word friend that’s the problem…perhaps acquaintance would be better….John/l\

    1. Yes! And at the same time I’ve had people who started out as facebook friends and became very much more involved in life, and true friends… it is a mixed blessing.

  2. I left facebook a year or so ago. I posted to say I was about to do this but its possible that some of those friends missed the status update and wondered what happened and whether I not only unfriended but blocked. Now I miss some of those friends’ updates but I don’t think it outweighs all the problems I often encountered with the whole shebang and the anxieties this provoked. Sorry you have had that experience.

    1. it can be a bit of a fermentation pot for drama, but, I stay with it. the people I don’t know who come and go don’t really trouble me (I don’t always write personal truth when writing poems) it is the couple of people who I knew outside of facebook who have used unfriending as a method to end real world friendships that really piss me off, but I couldn’t think of a way tow rite about that and be funny.

  3. Ah, the artificial world of FB. So callus and unfeeling, a 3 second update to status, emotion and events. To my mind, it is like a friendship wth a goldfish. Everyone is in their own bowls…they can see each other briefly if they are facing the same way, but never really connect. Your poem is lovely, the pain is not. I feel for you…as offered in a similar way, blogging and comments!

  4. *sticks hand up* Um…sorry…you shared boyfriends? No, no, it’s fine, no judgement. Say no more! *Wanders off to find a kitten photo* 😀

If they go then they weren’t worth keeping, lass. I have been off and on FB for many years since it first appeared and I keep a small list now of people I have found intriguing in one way or another since I signed up this last time under my pen name. I also interact with them all as much as I can and take an interest. I have done the large list thing but not this time around, this time it is just for me, at the moment anyway!

    1. Sharing boyfriends – well, small towns, you end up going out with the people your friends have been out with. I made a really good friend by dint of her going out with one of my exs, oddly!

  5. There has been times when someone has disappeared off my friends list without me removing them and the other person has not removed themselves either. It has happened a few time to myself and someone else and we put it down to a Facebook glitch. Problems is that the other party can refuse to believe it was that. However if they are not true friends this kind of incident will bring this out 🙂 x

    1. yes, those are an arse of epic proportions, I’ve seen it too. Twitter tells you when someone has blocked you, which can be a very illuminating cross-reference….
