In troubled times

This is what we have to do. We have to be kind to each other and try to take care of each other, whatever happens.

We must not fall into blaming and hating each other. There have been lies written and lies spoken and emotions played on. If we keep feeding the hate we are supporting the lie-mongers. We have to be better than that.

We must not ignore what is happening. We must not be overwhelmed by what is happening. We must not be paralysed by fear.

Keep doing the good things. Play. Give. Love. Make good things and share them. Make tea. Make cake. Make hope in every way you can think of. Make a future that is not impoverished by hate and fear. Make a future that is better than the politicians, better than the media, better than the people who can only see how to exploit other people.

Today a thing happened that may have dire consequences. This is true most days, we just don’t always know about it. The only answers are to do the best you can with what you have. These are the only answers there ever are. Be brave, be good, be open hearted, be shamelessly naive about the idea that things could be a whole lot better than this. Forgive the people who let you down. Move on.

Hope.

  1. As a non-EU/EEA citizen married to a UK citizen and living in an EU country, I am afraid…I don’t want to have to leave. But you are right. Breathe hope and look forward, and tomorrow I shall make a lemon cake. Thank you.

  2. It will be an interesting experiment. As I recall Europe was not all that eager to have the UK in their organization, and I wonder if they will care that they have left.

  3. This is wonderful advice for us no matter what side of the political spectrum, or of any given policy argument, we may stand on. Here’s hoping things end well.

  4. You’re far braver than I, Nimue. I can’t hope. That’s too much to ask of myself right now. But I will stand, and reach out. Even if it turns out, and although it very well might be, futile in the end.

I think it is possible to live life well or as best we can, even if hoping for something greater than that is too much to consider.

And there can always be a miracle…

    1. Sorry I got all big picture philosophical. I was very surprised to learn that the UK left the EU, I probably found out later than other people as I’m on the other side of the pond. I believe we will all be effected, and yes, we can hope that the consequences aren’t too unpredictable or bad. Hope in the specific situation is all we can do, most of us.

    2. Éilis Niamh, in my original shock and fear I forgot about miracles. Thank you for the reminder.

  5. Thank you for writing this. I needed the reminder, the nudge, and your words of hope in what has felt like a very dark day indeed. There are of course things we can do, and in the end it’s small things that change the way we feel and the the way we act and behave and believe. I will make tea. And cakes. And drawings. And talk to people, and smile. I’m starting to feel better.

  6. Well said. We all make the world in the way that we live. And the only place we can work from is the knife edge of now. We managed to live through eight years (!?) of Dubya Bush. You–and we–will live through Brexit. Today I saw the beautiful ships I work on floating high and proud at the dock in 2116. I’ll do the same each day I’m at work. For that to happen, there have to be people and money for things that are of no practical use. And so we will live to see a future where beauty is created for its own sake.

    1. I take a lot of comfort from history and all the things people, and cultures have weathered. It’s only when you give up that you’re truly beaten.
